Queen for a Day
women s fashion
My dad's mom was a cool lady. Her name was Sara Edna. She carried the nickname "Jake" as a kid and "Bubber" (pronounced "Bubba") after she bore children. She had 3 husbands, outliving each of them. She had a business, volunteered with the VFW auxiliary and veterans hospital, and was socially active. She even played the drums in a band called The Drifters. Here she looks like a participant on the old TV Show, "Queen for the Day." The photo is unmarked, but I'm guessing she's dressed up to attend some Veterans' Mardi Gras Ball and was elected their Queen.

Details and History
The Library of Congress website offers a multitude of historical images, many with no known restrictions on use. This 1897 Strohmeyer & Wyman stereograph is titled The new woman - wash day. If one explores 1890's fashion the subjects appear to be wearing clothing appropriate to the opposing gender. However, the lady's outfit may be a proper cycling outfit which could include breeches. This image reflects an issue from the Gay Nineties (1890-1900) when gender stereotypes were challenged by the developing suffragette movement.

Cool Women S Fashion images

A few nice women s fashion images I found:

American fashions, Winter 1899
women s fashion
Image by Claremont Colleges Digital Library
Item Title: American fashions, Winter 1899

Description/Notes: A woman is standing in front of a yellow chair. She is wearing a vivid, high-collared dark red satin suit with gray fur edging. A back view of the suit appears in the upper right of the plate. The sleeves are snug with a slight fullness at the shoulders. The jacket reaches her waist and is open at the front. The gray fur edges the wrists and the front opening. Two curved bands of patterned beige circle the bodice with a line of dark blue five pointed stars on the bands. Under the jacket she wears a high collared cream blouse with a black band at the top of the collar, three narrow black bands like middy braid underneath coming to a v at the front, and a black band with a large oval ornamental buckle across the bust over a fall of cream lace. The skirt is flared with fullness at the back and is in two layers. The upper layer is formed into very large zigzags edged with black braid, creating a petal effect. The underskirt is plain dark red satin. She wears grey gloves, over which is a fall of cream lace at each wrist. Her hat is black with a wide band of gray fur, trimmed with black and white plumes.

Portrait of an unidentified woman

Image by Australian National Maritime Museum on The Commons
This photo is part of the Australian National Maritime Museum’s William J Hall collection. The Hall collection provides an important pictorial record of recreational boating in Sydney Harbour, from the 1890s to the 1930s – from large racing and cruising yachts, to the many and varied skiffs jostling on the harbour, to the new phenomenon of motor boating in the early twentieth century. The collection also includes studio portraits and images of the many spectators and crowds who followed the sailing races.

The Australian National Maritime Museum undertakes research and accepts public comments that enhance the information we hold about images in our collection. If you can identify a person, vessel or landmark, write the details in the Comments box below.
